Mission & Purpose
The UGC CARE List Archive preserves and surfaces historical information about journals that appeared on the University Grants Commission (UGC) CARE list. Although the official list has been discontinued, this archive exists to:
- Preserve the historical record of the journals and their coverage years.
- Assist students, researchers and administrators verifying publication venues for evaluation, CVs and academic reporting.
- Provide an open, searchable interface with clear provenance and methodology.
Why this exists
When the official UGC CARE list was discontinued, many universities and researchers lost a centralized resource used for evaluating publication venues. This site fills that gap by collecting, curating, and presenting the historical data in a transparent manner.
Not-for-profit & community-focused
We operate as a not-for-profit volunteer project. All development, hosting, and data curation is funded by volunteers and small donations. We do not sell data or display intrusive advertising. Our goal is to keep the resource freely available for the academic community.
Data sources & methodology
We aim for transparent provenance. Key points:
- Primary sources: archived snapshots, official PDFs (where available), and institutional announcements.
- Normalization: titles, ISSNs and e-ISSNs are normalized, duplicates merged, and spelling variants reconciled.
- Coverage years: recorded per-journal when explicitly provided by source documents; where ambiguous, we provide a confidence note.
- Versioning: every dataset snapshot is timestamped and archived so users can cite a specific dataset version.
How we treat uncertainty
Where a source is ambiguous about inclusion or exact years, we include a provenance footnote and a confidence indicator (High / Medium / Low). Users can request corrections (see Contact page).

- Initial dataset: Compiled first public release of the dataset and search interface.
- Public launch: Launched search interface with filters and metadata pages.
- Ongoing: Continuous curation, corrections workflow, and improved search UX.
